IMDB rating: 8.60 Plot: Considered by many to be the best film ever made, this is the story of Charles Foster Kane. The film opens with a long shot of Xanadu – the private estate of one of the world’s richest men. In the middle of the estate is a castle. We see, inside the castle, a dying man examining a winter scene within a crystal ball. As he drops it, it smashes, and one word is heard – “Rosebud…” What follows are pieces of newsreel-like footage detailing how Kane amassed his fortune, and turning around full circle at the end. |

What Are The Must-Watch Movies For Pursuing A Career In Film?
I am 17 and I havee always wanted to pursue a career in filming (redundancy!). That being said, I haven’t been around for a llong time, so I haven’t seen a bunch of classics. I’ve seen just a few like Citizen Kane, To ill a Mockingbird, and Dr. Strangelove. But I want to know, what are the movies that, If I make it into film, will get me slapped in the face if I have never watched them when I am talking with a film professor? I need to start watching early so I have more knowledge about great movies and what they did for the filming society. I watch a lot of movies, but I need to watch even more to enlargen my brain library of great movies.
I’m not that big of a flim guy, but this site really breaks down the best films in history.

Ha, To ill a Mockingbird. I could just imagine that being the next Beastie Boys album. The Shawshank Redemption is a pretty big one. Memento, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, just to name a few…

Casablanca, Gone with the Wind. watch some Charlie Chaplin movies. Try to watch all the films on the AFI’s top 100 films list. Most of them are classics.

I’m 17 and want to go into film too! Hahaha, but don’t worry about not seeing all the classics. I’d focus more on the style film you want to go into- like, personally I like indie films/ sundance film festival types so I watch the winners from famous film festivals as they’re announced. I think that that is better!
But if you really want to watch the classics, I’d say Twelve Angry Men, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Casablanca, Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, It’s A Wonderful Life, King Kong, Jaws, Gone With The Wind, Pulp Fiction, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Wizard of Oz.
And personally, if you haven’t seen them, I think you definitely need to see The Darjeeling Limited, Rocket Science, Long Life Happiness and Prosperity, and Amelie. Really, they’re my absolute favorites of all time. So beautiful <3
Good luck in pursuing your dream! Maybe someday our paths will cross (when we’re both like, majorly successful and producing awesome films)!
EDIT: Hey! Why the thumbs down?! ![]()

A couple lists that will help you.
-Academy Award nominated films. If you’ve seen a large percentage of the films on this list, you’re well on your way.

-The AFI top 100 films of all time.

The other thing to do is look at actors, cinematographers, set designers, and directors who are represented on those lists and look at their other work.
The most important thing to remember is that not everyone likes the same movies. It’s likely there will be many highly regarded movies that you simply won’t like for one reason or another. But when you’ve watched enough movies, you’ll be able to tell the difference between a well made movie you didn’t like and a poorly made movie.

if you want to pursue a career in film, I’d advise watching movies in all genres, even if they aren’t your kind of movie… I wouldn’t worry about watching all the "greatest" films ever, although some of them would be required if I had my say… here are a few I’d say to watch:
The Godfather
Aliens
Halloween (the original, not Rob Zombie’s)
Psycho
Wizard of Oz
Ten Commandments (at the time of it’s production, this movie made landmark special effects achievments. good to know some of the origins of todays effects.)
A Clockwork Orange
Galdiator
Star Wars (yes the acting is bad, but it is THE sci-fi film)
Casablanca
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
The Matrix
Mars Attacks (just to see what a satire film is)
Silence of the Lambs
and watch these bad movies so you know what not to do:
I Come In Peace
Stop! Or MY Mom Will Shoot!
every Hulk Hogan movie ever made
Adventures of Pluto Nash
