Moving on — help me! How do I do it? It's been a year?
I had been in a long-term relationship (4 years) until Jan 2009. We broke up because we both wanted different things: he had kids and I didn’t want any. Neither of us were certain of a future together. However, we have continued to remain friends since we get along well intellectually. I am finding it hard to move on though…I feel like I have moved on and then I take two steps back. I am a bit shy and don’t know how to go about meeting guys. I tried online dating for a while but every guy I liked either didn’t like me back or those that did show interest, did not match up to my standards. I also found I was comparing some of them to my ex. Help me…how do I move on and what are the best ways for a working woman to meet more men (given that I work in a field with not many men)

For you to truly move on, you are going to have to stop talking with your ex.

This is a HUGE part of recovering from a break up.

You don’t have to stop talking to him forever, but just until you feel as though you can handle being friends with him without getting emotionally invested in him again. Just tell him that you really enjoy talking with him but that you need some time to heal from the break up and to move on with your life Tell him you will contact him when you are ready to talk again.

You can’t get over him if you are constantly talking with him and reminded of your relationship together. You feel like you are taking two steps back because every time you contact him, you ARE taking two steps back. You need to distance yourself from him for a while. This is the single most important part of moving on from any relationship.
