39 Steps, The (2008)

IMDB rating: 6.10

Plot: Richard Hannay, a mining engineer on holiday from the African colonies, finds London socialite life terribly dull. Yet it’s more then he bargained for when secret agent, Scudder, bursts into his room and entrusts him a coded notebook with map, concerning the impending start of World War I. In no time both German agents and the British law are chasing him, ruthlessly coveting the Roman numerals code, which Hannay believes he must crack himself. Masquerading as a liberal party pundit, Richard also gets stuck with parliamentary candidate Sir George Sinclair’s sister Victoria. They must survive with the secrets and decide who they can trust and how to keep it from others.

Just Curious Survey: With respect to the saying "making a mountain out a molehill" …?
… wouldn’t a molehill be considered a moutain, albeit a tiny one.

But for the moles, it would probably seem pretty big.

Mountain-ish.

And why do moles care about mountains anyway?

We thought the were burrowers, not mountaineers.

What’s your take?
.

What about………..making a quad laser out of a laser pointer?

Does that explain it better to you!? :)

i think your trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill

quit making a mountain out of a molehill
peach | Apr 08, 2008

I always thoght the saying was "Make a ountain out of an ant hill." That makes more sense to me. But good point! Have a star.
Morgan | Apr 08, 2008

you think too much into things. Old saying are old sayings… many of them don’t make sense.
Kelly G | Apr 08, 2008

One witty person must have said it to someone who was respected enough to be listened to. Then they started saying it and, before they knew it, the whole kingdom was saying it
mariethebeautiful | Apr 08, 2008

Making a mountain out of a molehill is not big and not clever.
Ramses II | Apr 08, 2008

omg I hate that saying so much my friend use to say it all the time
WestCoastGurl | Apr 08, 2008

I always thought that statement had something to do about girls hitting puberty or something…
David W | Apr 08, 2008

um well one would normally not be talking to a mole so for a human it completely makes sense…………………………. unless you like talking to moles………… totally normal………….
insert_name_here | Apr 08, 2008

I think the context of the expression is very obvious, and clearly suggests that someone is making a situation seem much larger or worse than it really is.
I think your efforts in the expansion of the concept could be put to better and more productive use
Dave | Apr 08, 2008

I think you’re making a molehill out of an anthill.
Aurelius | Apr 08, 2008

Probably to the moles it would seem like a mountain, but yeah I’m not really sure.
neopets | Apr 08, 2008

if you were talking to a mole, then your argument about size would be valid, but since people are usually talking to other people when making that statement, a molehill is still tiny. Mountains are defined as "a landmass that projects conspicuously above its surroundings and is higher than a hill" (from www.m-w.com); therefore, molehills aren’t just small moutains, they’re little hills.
Patty | Apr 08, 2008

yeah i thought they dug into the ground.

what’s a molehill? is it the pile of dirt from when they dig?

shouldn’t it be anthill? I mean, ants make hills.

oh i guess they want it molehill for the alliteration value.

alliteration advantage. verbal value. word w…oohoo?
so – ? – fishy | Apr 08, 2008

There is no such thing as a tiny mountain. There is a height requirement in order to be called a mountain, otherwise its a hill.
FastEddie | Apr 08, 2008

It would only be considered a mountain if the mole hill was located in the forest where the tree fell that no one was around to hear.

And yes, it still made a noise. Nice one, man!
Bear | Apr 08, 2008

What are you smoking right now?
And do you wanna share?
A "mole hill" would be the equivalent to the Himalayas to an ant.
My profound thought for the day!
Spacecat | Apr 08, 2008

I think you’re a very clever thinker; your curiosity should take you a long way. Just don’t stick your nose in a molehill.
Serendipity | Apr 08, 2008

LOL thats a mountain called to much thinking for me hahaha

I think I will jump while I can LOL
bunnypoodlebutt | Apr 08, 2008

Mom tried to put molasses on my oat meal freakin gross man, why would I want their a*sses in my food.
AKBOY | Apr 08, 2008

The expression is for humans, not moles ,so it wouldn’t make sense to reverse the mole hole and the mountain.
LGirl | Apr 08, 2008

Moles care a great deal about mountains. You would too if that was your habitat.

ive become disenchanted with the world because of a hard life , what can i do?
everyone i know has lead better lives than me, how do i deal with this ?

growing up i was enchanted with life, i was going to do this, and hopefully achieve that. – but because of a lot of misfortunes and now reaching the age of 32 –

i dont feel those things anymore , the world to me has turned out to be disappointing in my experience – and ive achieved nothing i wanted so far .

im 32 , have aged badly in my face, have minor body disfigurements through accidents years ago, a crooked little finger, 2 missing teeth at the front lower bottom and -

i have to say that my life has turned out rather disappointingly so far . suffered injustices, adversity’s , made critical mistakes , squandered away years , been into prison 11 years back, have a long psychiatric history , behaved in a violent conduct years ago – and as such of all this, i have missed out on a NORMAL life . a life of ; – building relationships with people , being employed , getting qualifications and most other things – the things that matter.

i have obviously survived up to now but its been very difficult to say the least –

the scenario now, more or less is : ive lived alone for 6 years in a 1 bedrooom flat on disability, owning ‘ few ‘ material belongings – getting help for my difficult psychological problems , accept my diagnosis , hoping to get another test to see if i have anxiety disorders – which i suspect – i see a support worker weekly , which makes me feel like a RETARD because im a 32 year old adult – im hoping to get psychotherapy but have to do the support worker appointments first.

it really has been pretty tough for me . – ive survived yes , only through inner strength – but ive achieved NOTHING i wanted to do – and got nothing i hoped for.

i feel insecure about my future , empty, lonely , and a sense of profound loss –

when i browse facebook and see all my old class mates that have done well, seemed to have lived average normal lives , most of them have had partners , have LIVED , travelled , have kids , are in work, enjoying their lives – one pretty blonde girl i remember ‘ louise ‘ – she had a crush on me in school ( back when i was cute and flawless ) – now lives in australia , has a good job -
i saw a picture of her with a big happy smile holding what looked like her little boy , she had sunglasses on and was standing on a sunny street that looked like ‘ ramsey street ‘ from the show ‘ neighbours ‘ – with a blue sky and fluffy clouds in the background.

i felt like crying , seeing reflected back at me the life i always wanted , hoped for , but never got .

a deep sense of loss and sadness engulfing me , in my dark , one bedroomed apartment.

the only things that keep me going are my ‘ remote ‘ dreams , the hope of attaining a good paying computer job, to build meaningful relationships then finally to move to a quiet coastal village near a seaside town somewhere.

but to me, those goals seem impossible. can anybody feel my sorrow here ? and just ….what will i do type despair ?

I feel like a failure compared to all my friends too – I live on disability and it sucks. I know how it feels to feel like you haven’t accomplished anything.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do about the past. Are you able to attend school? That might be a good place to start. Or if you have your degree, look into career counseling.

Moving on — help me! How do I do it? It's been a year?
I had been in a long-term relationship (4 years) until Jan 2009. We broke up because we both wanted different things: he had kids and I didn’t want any. Neither of us were certain of a future together. However, we have continued to remain friends since we get along well intellectually. I am finding it hard to move on though…I feel like I have moved on and then I take two steps back. I am a bit shy and don’t know how to go about meeting guys. I tried online dating for a while but every guy I liked either didn’t like me back or those that did show interest, did not match up to my standards. I also found I was comparing some of them to my ex. Help me…how do I move on and what are the best ways for a working woman to meet more men (given that I work in a field with not many men)

Just live your life, and eventually youll meet someone.
Kazaskater | Feb 07, 2010

For you to truly move on, you are going to have to stop talking with your ex.

This is a HUGE part of recovering from a break up.

You don’t have to stop talking to him forever, but just until you feel as though you can handle being friends with him without getting emotionally invested in him again. Just tell him that you really enjoy talking with him but that you need some time to heal from the break up and to move on with your life Tell him you will contact him when you are ready to talk again.

You can’t get over him if you are constantly talking with him and reminded of your relationship together. You feel like you are taking two steps back because every time you contact him, you ARE taking two steps back. You need to distance yourself from him for a while. This is the single most important part of moving on from any relationship.

Try it.

HCL Me Z3939 vs Acer 5738G vs Dell Studio 15 Laptop (S541028IN8)?
I’m 16 year old and am looking for a PC, using which I can surf the net (I’m an extensive internet user, video and text chatting, orkutting and facebooking, e-mailing, blogging, surfing, watching youtube videos, downloading movies and songs and stuff), do my school work (i have office 07, so don’t need it pre-installed), listen songs (that means it should have a good inbuilt speakers, as well as a good sound card for external speakers), watching movies (I currently love watching 720p movies, as they are of damn good quality and HD-space efficient too (as compared to 1080p), but would not mind watching latter, if have a 500GB HD. But, actually, I don’t find much difference between the 2 quality wise, by-the-way, I mean I’m looking for about 14-15 inch monitor along with an HD supporting graphics card), should have no less than 500gb HD space, should have no less than 4GB RAM, preferably DDR3, should have 3-5 USBs, external monitor output is not required, but is appreciated if it’s there, in-built memory card reader, a nice touchpad, and a not-too-small keyboard, with multimedia keys will be appreciated.

I’m not into games, but they go once in a while, so no alienware stuff, neither do i seek a mac, as i love windows 7.

So, i found that the 3 laptops mentioned above meet me requirements. Which 1 should i consider?

Dell studio is the costliest, and the only advantage in it is the presence of the nvidia card and intel i3 processor whereas other 2 have intel g45 cards and intel core 2 duo processors. is it worth the extra 7k?

here’s the link from where i got the info about these laptops-

http://www.hclstore.in/z3939?category_id =49&pq=0&fq=5&lprice=10000&a mp;hprice=70000&fn_1=HDD&fv_1=50 0+GB+SATA+HDD&fn_2=Memory&fv_2=4 +GB+DDR2+RAM&fn_3=OS&fv_3=+Windo ws+7&fn_4=Processor&fv_4=Intel%A E+Core%992+Duo+Processor+T6600 (HCL me)

http://www.acer.co.in/acer/product.do?li nk=oln85e.redirect&changedAlts=& kcond48e.c2att101=-1&CRC=2759084358# wrAjaxHistory=0 (Acer)

http://configure.ap.dell.com/dellstore/c onfig.aspx?oc=s541028in8&c=in&l= en&s=dhs&cs=indhs1 (dell)

also, dell is cool looking due to its colours…
@SP but won’t dell i3 and i5 processors along with nVidia 512MB provide a descent HD video playback?

or will it be same on both?

I wouldn’t choose the dell because all it has extra is NVIDIA and i think that’s for gaming graphics. I would personally choose the Acer 5738G because i own one and i love it. Good luck finding a good laptop!
